Most photo developing stores offer large-size prints, making it possible for everyone to print their own photo-quality images. Before printing however, an image must be properly prepared. Creating a poster requires that most images be resized and saved in the right resolution. This can be accomplished with some basic knowledge of image dimensions and resolution and a few simple steps to set them properly.

Creating a 24 X 36 Inch Poster in Photoshop Elements

Step 1

Choose "File > Open" or "Control + O" and browse for the image you want to make into a poster.

Step 2

Identify the present dimensions of the image. This is found on the bottom of your image's workspace. There you will see a percent number which tells you what percentage of the entire image is appearing in your workspace. Next to that is a drop-down box that shows various information about your image. If the dimensions are not shown, open the drop-down box and check "Document Dimensions." You will now see the size of your image and its present resolution. A 24- x 36-inch poster needs to have a resolution of at least 240, though 300 will result in a better quality printed picture. If your image is this size, you're ready to send it to the printer.

Step 3

Resize your image by choosing "Image > Resize > Image Size" or by clicking "Control + Alt + I." In the dialogue box you will see two boxes--Pixel Dimensions and Document Size. Pixel Dimensions are normally adjusted for computer images, while Document Size is adjusted for print images. In the drop-down boxes on the right side of the Document Size box there are a number of options for measuring the image size. Choose "Inches." Set the width to 24 inches and the height to 36. Don't click "OK" yet.

Step 4

Adjust the resolution of your image. If the resolution is less than 240, you will need to resample your image. In the drop-down box next to "Resample Image" (make sure it is checked), choose "Bicubic Smooth." Set your resolution at 300 and click "OK."

Step 5

Choose "File > Save As." In dialogue box name your image and choose JPEG as the file type. Click "OK." You are now ready to print your picture.

Desk That Turns Into Dining Table

Desk That Turns Into Dining Table

Upcycling experts Jenny Lloyd and Jonathan Parkin apply their transformative flair to a stunning upcycled desk.

YOU WILL NEED

upcycled-desk-before

To strip the desk

  • Fine and medium grade sandpaper will sometimes be enough to strip a thinnish varnish/OR
  • Paint/varnish stripper
  • An old 50mm paintbrush
  • Washing up sponge with an abrasive side
  • Fine and medium grade sandpaper
  • An old toothbrush for cleaning corners

    To paint

    • Matt emulsion
    • 50mm paintbrush
    • To finish stripped and painted areas
    • Sandpaper
    • Fine wire wool
    • Duster
    • Beeswax with lanolin. Try Carr & Day & Martin's Leather Balsam
    • Soft cloths for applying wax and buffing
    • Castors: Try 125mm medium-duty castors with grey rubber wheels from Castors Online
    • Use swivel castors on the back and lockable castors on the front

      INSTRUCTIONS

Choose a table or desk that will still have pleasing proportions without its long legs, and decide which areas you want to paint and/or strip. In this case the legs had to be sawn off – if you are doing this take care that your cuts are straight, and are all the same distance from the table top.

      1. STRIP all of the varnished or painted visible areas back to bare wood with paint/varnish stripper following the instructions supplied. Once the piece is stripped and dry, go over it all with fine and medium grade sandpaper as necessary, for a smooth finish.
      2. APPLY two coats of paint. When this is dry, go over with fine sandpaper and wire wool until all areas are smooth and you are happy with the finish.
      3. SAND the edges with fine and medium grade paper to create an aged look. Don't be scared of this – if you go too far you can just add some more paint and start again. Then move on to other areas, such as corners that would get natural wear and knocks.
      4. DUST once you're satisfied with the paintwork, and apply wax using a cloth, removing all residue with a second, clean cloth and buffing to a shine. Attach the castors using the screws provided, placing the lockable ones on the front corners so the table is easy to move around but can still be kept in place.

Seat everyone in style and comfort with this guide to selecting the best dining table for your space.

        SHAPE MATTERS

Circular tables are good for conversation and feel more inclusive, making it easier to talk not just to your immediate neighbours but everyone. Square and rectangular tables will line up neatly with other furniture and can be pushed against the wall if you need space, for a party, for example.

        SIZE IT UP

As a rule of thumb, a square table measuring 90cm x 90cm, or a 90cm diameter circular one, will seat four people snugly. For six people, a rectangular 150cm x 90cm table, or a circular 130cm diameter design will work. For eight people, allow a table of 200cm x 100cm, or 150cm diameter.

Get the right size of table for the space. When you've found a table you like, and before you buy, check if it will work in your space. Cut and stick together sheets of newspaper to the size of your table, and lay the template on the floor to give you a sense of how it will fit. Remember you'll need around 60-90cm from the table edge to the nearest wall/piece of furniture, and if you can spare 100cm there will be even more room for people to walk behind seated diners.

Consider tables that can be extended if you like to have a big crowd over. Gateleg tables, which have a flap or flaps that fold down, are perfect for compact rooms. Check that there's enough space when at its maximum size.

        TWICE THE VALUE

If your table will double as an eating and working space, you'll need one with a practical, hardwearing surface. For instance, a design with a top that can be re-oiled or painted would be better than a lacquered one.
