How to Calculate the Best Table Size for Your Dining Room

ErikaWittlieb/CC0/Pixabay

Congratulations on your decision to get a new dining room table. Choosing a new style of table can change the whole vibe in your dining area. It's important to choose a table that fits the size of your room so there's room for everyone to walk around. Taking the time to measure the size of your dining room and comparing your open floor space to standard table sizes can help you choose a piece of furniture that's a good fit for your home.

Determine the Size of Your Dining Area

Hook the end of a tape measure to something solid against the wall, like the door trim, or have a helper hold the end against the wall. Measure all the way across the room to the opposite wall. Make a note of this size, and then repeat the measuring process on the other two walls in the room. Multiply the two numbers together to determine the size of the room in square feet. If you're choosing a dining table for a room in a house with an open floor plan, measure to the edge of the area where you want the dining area to end.

Draw the Room

Sketch the room on a sheet of grid paper or enter the dimensions in a 3D room layout planning tool. While a larger open space around the table gives a room a casual, airy feeling, allow a minimum of three feet around the perimeter of the room for walking space. The remaining space in the center of the room is the maximum to allow for a dining table. It's easier to fit a small table into a large room than it is to crowd an oversized table into a tiny room. If you have extra floor space available after placing your dining table, you can adjust the way it's positioned in the room to enhance the flow of foot traffic and increase visual appeal.

Consider Decor Elements Around the Room's Outer Edge

Some pieces of furniture are big enough they're hard to move, making them almost a permanent part of your floor plan. If there are other large furnishings around the outer edge of the room, such as a hutch or curio cabinet, be sure to include the dimensions of those items in your sketch and in your calculations.

The Role of Table Top Shapes in Choosing Table Size

This is a tip you may see at play if you look closely at tabletops for restaurants. This is because restaurant tables are often packed in snugly to provide seating for as many patrons as possible. When space is at a premium — for example if you have a small dining area and can't arrange it to leave floor space around the table — consider a round or oval table. The rounded edges of the tabletop can allow for foot traffic.

Consider a Table That Has a Leaf

Choosing a table that has a leaf is one easy way to accommodate an occasional large group while enjoying the coziness of a small table. Just add the leaf when guests are coming over and remove it when there's a smaller group present. Floor space may be tied up with the leaf is installed, but it's also freed up when you restore the table to its smaller leaf-free size.

8 Brown Leather Dining Chairs

8 Brown Leather Dining Chairs

Be it at a chic restaurant, or at your home, food evokes all the emotions and brings together your loved ones in an everyday celebration of life. The aura of the dining space is beautified by your dining table where you indulge in soulful conversations or just loosen yourselves after a difficult day. To suit your comfort at the best, leather dining chairs impart an unmatched experience. Be it contemporary leather or ultra-modern leather dining chairs and table, delving into an enjoyable eating expedition every day is a crucial factor. Hence, Leather is a stylish and family friendly choice for your dining rooms or kitchens.

The most commonly used leather for chairs is usually semi-gloss, surface-colored smooth leather. It's mostly cow hide, which has a very protective finish. The leather is convenient to clean and to take care of with adjustable signs of wear. The layer of color can vary in thickness.

If it's very thin, the leather is known as semi-aniline leather (also lightly pigmented napa leather). Also, given that the leather used for chairs is in direct contact with the skin, the warmer and softer feel is an important factor. When you aim at higher price ranges, the grain texture of the leather is usually natural while in lower price ranges, the leather is always sanded and embossed. This leads to less damage because poorer skins can be easily attacked by insects, diseases or other injuries. Quality leather dining chairs usually last as long as 25 years or more. Some people will keep it for 40 years! So it is overall a classic investment.

Let's look at how to pick the most suitable leather chair for your dining table set.

  • Check for grains and any markings:  real and genuine leather contains natural markings and variations. Most aniline leather dining chair covers usually have prominent markings, scars or wrinkles. If the leather feels smooth and uniform, it is of lower quality or is fake.
  • Judge whether the leather is genuine: Begin with checking the back of the furniture to check if there's a single piece of leather or various stitched together. The average size of a usable hide is usually 72 inches by 52 inches so if it's larger than that, it could be fake.
  • Feel the texture of the leather: Higher quality leathers are usually softer and warmer when you touch it. Lower quality leathers will feel firmer and cooler when you touch them.
  • Smell the leather: Genuine high quality leather has a particularly distinctive appealing aroma. Fake and lower quality leathers have a very weird chemical smell.

You could rummage through a dynamic range of leather dining chairs at Choice furniture Superstore and make your ideal choice. The most picked ones are usually the grey leather dining chair or even the black leather dining chairs.  If you're looking for an all leather sturdy chair for your dining table set, your perfect pick is our scroll back natural/rustic plain black leather dining chair, which is available in brown too. If you're interested in more of a rustic outlook, we have the brown faux leather dining chairs to suit your household. It's time you pick your favorite one and take it home.

Materials used

Materials that we use are premium quality semi-gloss and surface colored smooth leather for the seats and sometimes mahogany wood in case you wish to have wooden legs for the chair.

After having purchased a leather dining chair, let us view ways to style them.

Styling Tips

Leather furniture isn't just for traditional style. This classic has been revitalized as a trendy home addition, and here we share how to decorate with dark, light, and colorful leathers.

  • Traditional leather dining chairs are usually dark by nature so you could layer them with cream, pastel, or white pillows.
  • You could balance the visual weight of brown or black leather furnishings by creating colored walls and textiles. Natural elements such as fresh flowers and a driftwood lamp, look great with the leather's smooth grain.

  • You could also install hanging light frames on the top of your dining table to allow a cozy vibe to your dining area.
  • You could hang wall arts and gorgeous paintings on the wall opposite to your dining table to compliment the leather dining set.
  • You could also place a standing lampshade to add a warm tone to your dining space.

Now let's take a look at some handling instructions to take better care of your leather dining chair set.

Handling instructions

Leather is one of the more durable, low-maintenance surfaces for home furnishings. Keeping your leather dining chair clean can be done in the following ways:

  • You're recommended to dust your leather dining chairs with a dry cloth or preferably a vacuum cleaner.
  • If cleaning using soap, first wet the cloth with soap, clean it and then use another cloth soaked in distilled water to clean it. Finally use a dry towel to clean up.
  • Avoid saddle soap, detergents, oils, furniture polishes, abrasive materials and any cleaners which have any caustic ingredients.
  • In case of spills, remove from the surface as soon as possible to keep them from soaking in and forming a permanent stain.
  • If you wish to keep the leather soft and durable, after cleaning, apply a commercial leather conditioner.

You have your prerequisite ready to purchase a brand new set of leather dining chairs. Visit Choice of furniture Superstore today and explore a vivid array of furniture displays! Select the best to complement your interior decor and amp the style quotient of your home.

How to Create a 24 X 36 Poster in Photoshop Elements

By Julie Battern

Chatting on the Internet is easy.

i Jupiterimages/Brand X Pictures/Getty Images

Most photo developing stores offer large-size prints, making it possible for everyone to print their own photo-quality images. Before printing however, an image must be properly prepared. Creating a poster requires that most images be resized and saved in the right resolution. This can be accomplished with some basic knowledge of image dimensions and resolution and a few simple steps to set them properly.

Creating a 24 X 36 Inch Poster in Photoshop Elements

Step 1

Choose "File > Open" or "Control + O" and browse for the image you want to make into a poster.

Step 2

Identify the present dimensions of the image. This is found on the bottom of your image's workspace. There you will see a percent number which tells you what percentage of the entire image is appearing in your workspace. Next to that is a drop-down box that shows various information about your image. If the dimensions are not shown, open the drop-down box and check "Document Dimensions." You will now see the size of your image and its present resolution. A 24- x 36-inch poster needs to have a resolution of at least 240, though 300 will result in a better quality printed picture. If your image is this size, you're ready to send it to the printer.

Step 3

Resize your image by choosing "Image > Resize > Image Size" or by clicking "Control + Alt + I." In the dialogue box you will see two boxes--Pixel Dimensions and Document Size. Pixel Dimensions are normally adjusted for computer images, while Document Size is adjusted for print images. In the drop-down boxes on the right side of the Document Size box there are a number of options for measuring the image size. Choose "Inches." Set the width to 24 inches and the height to 36. Don't click "OK" yet.

Step 4

Adjust the resolution of your image. If the resolution is less than 240, you will need to resample your image. In the drop-down box next to "Resample Image" (make sure it is checked), choose "Bicubic Smooth." Set your resolution at 300 and click "OK."

Step 5

Choose "File > Save As." In dialogue box name your image and choose JPEG as the file type. Click "OK." You are now ready to print your picture.

Desk That Turns Into Dining Table

Desk That Turns Into Dining Table

Upcycling experts Jenny Lloyd and Jonathan Parkin apply their transformative flair to a stunning upcycled desk.

YOU WILL NEED

upcycled-desk-before

To strip the desk

  • Fine and medium grade sandpaper will sometimes be enough to strip a thinnish varnish/OR
  • Paint/varnish stripper
  • An old 50mm paintbrush
  • Washing up sponge with an abrasive side
  • Fine and medium grade sandpaper
  • An old toothbrush for cleaning corners

    To paint

    • Matt emulsion
    • 50mm paintbrush
    • To finish stripped and painted areas
    • Sandpaper
    • Fine wire wool
    • Duster
    • Beeswax with lanolin. Try Carr & Day & Martin's Leather Balsam
    • Soft cloths for applying wax and buffing
    • Castors: Try 125mm medium-duty castors with grey rubber wheels from Castors Online
    • Use swivel castors on the back and lockable castors on the front

      INSTRUCTIONS

Choose a table or desk that will still have pleasing proportions without its long legs, and decide which areas you want to paint and/or strip. In this case the legs had to be sawn off – if you are doing this take care that your cuts are straight, and are all the same distance from the table top.

      1. STRIP all of the varnished or painted visible areas back to bare wood with paint/varnish stripper following the instructions supplied. Once the piece is stripped and dry, go over it all with fine and medium grade sandpaper as necessary, for a smooth finish.
      2. APPLY two coats of paint. When this is dry, go over with fine sandpaper and wire wool until all areas are smooth and you are happy with the finish.
      3. SAND the edges with fine and medium grade paper to create an aged look. Don't be scared of this – if you go too far you can just add some more paint and start again. Then move on to other areas, such as corners that would get natural wear and knocks.
      4. DUST once you're satisfied with the paintwork, and apply wax using a cloth, removing all residue with a second, clean cloth and buffing to a shine. Attach the castors using the screws provided, placing the lockable ones on the front corners so the table is easy to move around but can still be kept in place.

Seat everyone in style and comfort with this guide to selecting the best dining table for your space.

        SHAPE MATTERS

Circular tables are good for conversation and feel more inclusive, making it easier to talk not just to your immediate neighbours but everyone. Square and rectangular tables will line up neatly with other furniture and can be pushed against the wall if you need space, for a party, for example.

        SIZE IT UP

As a rule of thumb, a square table measuring 90cm x 90cm, or a 90cm diameter circular one, will seat four people snugly. For six people, a rectangular 150cm x 90cm table, or a circular 130cm diameter design will work. For eight people, allow a table of 200cm x 100cm, or 150cm diameter.

Get the right size of table for the space. When you've found a table you like, and before you buy, check if it will work in your space. Cut and stick together sheets of newspaper to the size of your table, and lay the template on the floor to give you a sense of how it will fit. Remember you'll need around 60-90cm from the table edge to the nearest wall/piece of furniture, and if you can spare 100cm there will be even more room for people to walk behind seated diners.

Consider tables that can be extended if you like to have a big crowd over. Gateleg tables, which have a flap or flaps that fold down, are perfect for compact rooms. Check that there's enough space when at its maximum size.

        TWICE THE VALUE

If your table will double as an eating and working space, you'll need one with a practical, hardwearing surface. For instance, a design with a top that can be re-oiled or painted would be better than a lacquered one.
